An Interest Is Not a Disorder
The single most important fact in this field: a paraphilia — an atypical sexual interest — is not a mental disorder. The DSM-5-TR draws the line deliberately. An interest becomes a paraphilic disorder only when it causes significant distress or impairment, or when acting on it has involved harm or the risk of harm to another person. Population research consistently finds that atypical sexual interests are far more common in the general public than most people assume; the great majority of people who have one will never meet criteria for any disorder.
