Sex Addiction FAQs

Have you engaged in a pattern of sexual behavior, over a period of months or years, that has caused you concern and hurt your loved ones? Have you ‘tried to stop’ and been unable to? Do you frequently think or daydream or fantasize about sex? Do you view pornography and masturbate often? If this describes you, or a part of you, you might call Intrapsychic for an assessment.

There is now solid empirical evidence in support of a type of treatment, called Mentalizing, for the treatment of various psychiatric disorders. What we ask for at Intrapsychic is honesty and effort; if these are combined with our methods, intimacy issues improve, relationships heal, and compulsive sexual behavior problems are left in the past.

A friend of one of our patients told him, when he was frustrated with the length of treatment, that he had been ‘walking away from home’ for some time, and it would take time in treatment to find his way back. We suggest a six-month commitment, followed by an evaluation of gains and remaining problems. Dedicated effort, over perhaps a 24-month time period, can lead to symptom relief.

We have both, and the treatment plan, subsequent to assessment, will make recommendations. Patients may choose to do both individual and group treatment weekly, and they also may choose one or the other. An example of a patient in the early stages of group treatment: He remarked, in front of the group, that he had simply never spoken of these issues to anyone, over his entire lifecourse. His response to a question as to ‘how it felt’ to disclose the information that he had: ‘I feel…relieved.’ We say that patients ‘stand on each other’s shoulders’ inside the group room – an achievement or disclosure by one patient helps the next, and so on. Our goal, again, is to ‘go where the pain (or shame) is.’

Yes. We have a psychiatrist on staff, who sees Intrapsychic patients. For patients whose behavior has been entrenched, and lasted for decades, medication can be a useful intervention as the patient stabilizes.

We do, indeed. Do not allow your location to preclude you from seeking treatment at Intrapsychic. We offer simple telephone and online Zoom sessions.

We can begin assessment nearly immediately (and remotely). Individual sessions can begin after assessment, as can group sessions, if space provides for it. If groups have reached a critical mass, patients are placed on a waiting list. Usually, wait list patients can be seen in group treatment within about six weeks.
